This week Learner Circle is mighty impressed with Gita Gopinath, our Malayali girl who is now the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund. We have chosen to write about her in our #belike series as she seems to be the trendsetter of the moment.

She was born in Kolkata, India, in an ordinary Malayali family. This ordinary girl is now making waves across the world with her work.
Who is she?
After obtaining her Post Graduation from the University of Delhi, she went on to complete her Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University in 2001. While doing her doctoral research in Princeton, she won Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Research Award. She then became Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.
In 2018 Gita Gopinath was nominated as the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund. She has garnered respect and admiration for this position as she is now the first female in history to achieve this feat. In early 2022, she is all set to replace Geoffrey Okamoto as the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
What has she achieved?
Gita Gopinath has many achievements to her credit including being chosen as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011. In 2019 the President of India awarded her the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman. In 2019 Foreign Policy named her one of the Top Global Thinkers. In 2021, Financial Times named her among ’25 most influential people of the year.’ Bloomberg named her as ’50 people who defined 2019’.
What can we learn from her?
In an interview, her mother mentioned that Gita Gopinath, until class 7 was an average performer in school. It was only after that did she improve academically and started scoring high marks.
Academic performance can be improved, if you work hard.
