Hawa Hawaii – Bollywood dances that you must learn

The magic and power of Bollywood

Aka Chikee Lakee Chikee Chikee Lakee Chu’ and ‘You see the whole country of the system is just a Position by the haemoglobin in the atmosphere’, does it sound like gibberish? If it does, then, this is iconic gibberish that probably made millions of Indians dance in their small homes in distant villages or their big bungalows in big towns. This is the magic of Bollywood and the magic of dance.

In 2013, scores of Indian parents and kids lifted up their lungis to dance to the ever famous and catchy tune of lungi dance’. This happened after millions watched Shahrukh Khan lift up his lungi on a railway station and showed us how it’s done. That’s the power of Bollywood Dance. There is an absolute certainty that almost every Indian girl in their respective times has dreamt of dancing like Madhuri Dixit in Dola Re or Aishwarya Rai in Kajra re!

The influence of Bollywood

The Bollywood industry has influenced us greatly and is one of the most successful industries in India. One of the reasons for this success is the incredible song and dance routines included in the movies. From Madhubala’s dance routine in ‘Sangdil’ in the 1960s or Katrina Kaif’s explosive dance moves in ‘Suryavanshi’, we all are incredibly addicted to this art form. In fact, Bollywood song and dance has captivated us right from the 1940s.

The evolution of Bollywood Dance

It is inevitable that as this Industry continued to entertain us it also evolved in its dance styles and movements over the years. There are dance moves that have become iconic and historical. Mr Amitabh Bachchan has his own unique style, no matter what the music is. Anyone who follows his work, will be able to break into his dancing style, just at the hint of a song. There are stars like him who have made an incredible mark with their style. Dev Anand, who has that light shake in the head, as he lip-synced to ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ among the mountains in ‘Kala Bazaar’. Shammi Kapoor who did that immortal trendy Jitterbug move as he screamed through the snow in Junglee. We can move through history watching the evolution of dance and stars as the shutterbugs open and shut.

In the early 1960s, the dance moves were simple and mostly attracted the audience because of the charisma of the actors. Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Rajesh Khanna. It was a decade of hedonism and romance in Bollywood. The actresses Waheeda Rahman, Saira Banu and Nutan followed their co-stars’ footsteps.

It was after Shammi Kapoor and Saira Banu tumbled down snow capped mountains, that Mr Amitabh Bachchan appeared on the screen. He was tall, angry and stylish. No one has ever forgotten his dance moves in ‘Rang Barse’ and ‘My name is Anthony Gonsalves’. Then came the dream girl, Hema Malini and everyone’s dreams changed. Who can forget her performance in the song ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ in Sholay as Gabbar Sing forced to move on glass pieces? Suddenly in the 1980s, there was an explosive change in the dance, with Mithun Chakrabothy dragging in the disco, with ‘I am a disco dancer’ and ‘Jimmy Jimmy aaja’. Praveen Babi’s dance in ‘Jawani Janeman’ in the movie ‘Namak Halaal’ not only mesmerized Shashi Kapoor but the world. Zeenat Taman followed in ‘Laila O Laila’ and ‘Om Shanti Om’. Through the decades we have collected our favourite dance numbers from Bollywood. Each style is unique, iconic and immortal. But there are some stars and their performances that will stay with us forever and perhaps change the way we dance to tunes.
