The world has thrown forward many adjectives to describe Arjit Singh’s voice. His tone, his texture, his emotion, expression all have been analysed and labelled. While some describe his voice as exemplary, others say it's soulful. While still others just call him the ‘King of Playback Singing’
Arjit Singh was born in West Bengal to a Sikh father and Bengali mother. Although Arjit started his career in 2005 in a reality show called ‘Fame Gurukul’, he was unknown as an artist. Fame found him in 2013 with his infamous song ‘Tum Hi Ho’. He is currently the recipient of a national award and six Filmfare Awards. In 2020 Spotify declared him as the most-streamed Indian artist of the year. He is also the most followed Asian soloist on Spotify.
When did his journey begin?
His journey as a musician began at a very early age. Just like Mozart, Beethoven, A R Rahman, Arjit Singh also began his musical journey early. He was surrounded by a musical family and therefore, growing up as a young child, he was always more inclined towards music. He was only 9 years old when he got a scholarship from the Indian Government to train in vocal classicals. Arjit loved listening to Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Mozart, and Beethoven while growing up. He was obsessed with musicians like Bade Gulam Ali Khan, Ustad Rashid Khan and Zakir Hussain.
The beginning – his career, the pitfalls
At the age of 18, he was eliminated from a reality show. His next two songs never got released due to production delays and changes. He later won another reality show, moved to Mumbai and built his own recording studio. It was only when he got an opportunity to work with Pritam, that he began to produce and program music by himself. His career gradually gave him more opportunities and he eventually sprang to the spotlight.
The world heard the echoes of his voice
Soon, the world was humming to his songs or singing along. His songs in the movies Agent Vinod, Cocktail, Barfi and Players hit the big scene almost at the same time. Suddenly, Arjit Singh’s songs were being played a million times a day in India alone. There was no turning back for him, as he seemed to give us record breaking music year after year. Soon, he began to work with some big names in the industry.
His achievements
Arjit Singh has won many awards to his credit. The list is long and endless. One of his most notable achievements is having got 9 awards from ten nominations for the song ‘Tum Hi Ho’. In 2016, he was awarded the Wizcraft Honour for the best live performer and he was among the top ten to be featured in the SSE Arena, in the SSE live awards.
